Perfect Angel - A Tribute to Minnie Ripperton at the Hollywood Bowl, September 24, 2025

The spectacular Lizz Wright opened last night's "Perfect Angel" tribute show to Minnie Ripperton at the Hollywood Bowl. Another standout performance for me was Chante Moore, who had the vocal chops to deliver on Ripperton's best known recording, "Lovin' You," singing with heart and honesty. I also very much enjoyed Aloe Blacc, a solid performer who knows how to move, and a very tight and energetic male vocal quartet Kings Return. It was wonderful seeing legend George Benson perform, who spoke touchingly about his interactions with Ripperton and his history of Hollywood Bowl performances. Always solid is the Sara Gazarek group saje, performing their usual blend of gossamer harmonies.

The capper was a surprise appearance by Stevie Wonder, who was accompanied onstage by Minnie Ripperton's daughter Maya Rudolf and her partner, film maker Paul Thomas Anderson. The night closed in a somewhat disjointed and unfocused way, but nobody cared because - Stevie Wonder! Stevie spoke about the importance of love and music in this current "Not So United" States of America. Big thanks to Bob Speck for the hook up and the good company of Jeffrey Gimble and James Gavin.
